Each year, the passing rate for Oregon State students is above 90 percent, compared with a national passing rate of about 75 percent. That puts Oregon State among the top schools in the nation.

Programs We Offer

All Oregon State engineering and computer science programs are fully accredited and offer a Bachelor of Science degree through basic four-year curricula. In the College of Engineering, you´ll spend your freshman and sophomore years in premajor programs that prepare you for a professional program in your junior and senior years. Pre-engineering and pre-computer science courses can be taken at Oregon State, other four-year schools or community colleges. If you want to study in these areas, start preparing by taking mathematics, including advanced algebra and trigonometry, and by studying the sciences, including physics, chemistry and biology. Because engineers and computer information system professionals must communicate effectively and work in teams, you should also take English and speech courses.

The broader and stronger your foundation, the higher you can build. So along with calculus, chemistry and calculus-based physics, most freshmen in engineering and computer programs also take an orientation course and classes in the humanities, communications and social sciences. The orientation course helps students choose a major and options appropriate for them. A general engineering program is available for freshmen who aren't sure which engineering major is right for them. Students in management information systems will mostly take courses from the Oregon State Baccalaureate Core and from the business core curriculum during their first year.


Sometimes the best way to learn is to do. Internships are becoming increasingly important for landing a great job after college, and more than 80 percent of our engineering and computer science students participate in at least one during their time at Oregon State. Assistance in applying and interviewing is available through Oregon State Career Services. The Multiple Engineering Co-op Program (MECOP) and Civil Engineering Co-op Program (CECOP) offer two paid six-month internships during the third and fourth years of a five-year program of study. On average, participating students earn a total of $40,000 during their two internships. To be considered for these internships, you must be admitted to the professional program. Industrial interview teams select students into these programs and place them with Oregon companies. Oregon State is home to one of the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI) research parks.

For students interested in an engineering career in the forest products industry, the College of Engineering and the College of Forestry offer a joint five-year degree in civil engineering and forest engineering.


Anything worthwhile, including college, requires an investment. But we might be able to defray some of your startup costs. Scholarships are available at the university level, as well as from individual colleges and departments. Most scholarships are awarded based on information in the Oregon State scholarship application submitted with your application for admission, but others require special applications. The deadline for applying for university scholarships is Feb. 1. Be sure to check with your college and department on the deadlines for other scholarships you might be eligible for. College of Engineering students received a total of $6.4 million in scholarships last year, largely through generous support from alumni and industry.

Other Academic Programs

Oregon State is full of resources for ambitious or curious students. Many engineering and computer science students are involved in the Honors College,  National Student Exchange and Study Abroad programs. Such programs offer challenges and academic training to support your intellectual, professional and personal growth.
