Smarter Balanced Assessments: Use in Course Placement

In support of the state’s implementation of Smarter Balanced assessment and College and Career Readiness standards, Oregon State has adopted the following policy related to the use of these assessments in Math placement:

IN MATHEMATICS

New incoming students will be permitted to take MTH 111 or MTH 105 (based on student’s anticipated major) if:

  • They earn a Level 4 on the 11th grade Smarter Balanced Assessment in mathematics and complete an appropriate mathematics course in grade 12; or
  • They earn a Level 3 on the 11th grade Smarter Balanced Assessment in mathematics and complete an appropriate mathematics course in grade 12 with a B or better.

Eligible students are still required to take OSU’s math placement exam prior to enrolling in the qualified courses above so that we may advise them appropriately prior to and during their first term.

Students wishing to benefit from this policy must provide official documentation to their academic advisor at new student orientation that verifies their eligibility to enroll in MTH 111 or MTH 105 under this policy, as Smarter Balanced scores and results are not directly sent to OSU on the student’s behalf.

IN ENGLISH

Oregon State University does not offer remedial English coursework.  All students, regardless of Smarter Balanced assessment scores are placed into a college-level course.
